It's all relative
At least when it comes to money it's all relative. For instance, I heard yesterday that Justin Bieber, the 16-year-old musical heartthrob makes $300,000 per concert. His cut. Wow. Can you imagine? Then, as I've mentioned before, Jennifer Lopez has a new $12 million contract to judge the upcoming season of American Idol. Holy buckets!
My million dollar equivalent right now? $20,000. That's what it would take to change our lives. Doesn't seem like much in comparison to Justin's & Jennifer's takes does it? Might as well be $300,000 or $12 million though. That twenty grand would pay off all the things we need to pay off and allow us to survive, I think, on my salary. Allright everyone...how do I make that kind of bank PDQ...and legally, by the way. Any ideas?

Our Situation
So, some people have asked me about our "situation." You know, how we got here, why we're struggling. So I thought I'd explain in a little more detail. We sold a business about 2 1/2 years ago, it was what my husband had done for a living for 10+ years. Sadly, we sold it at a loss, just glad to get out without losing everything. The he looked for work, found a great job, worked his butt off for six months, then was permanently laid off, along with his enitre shift. Sad face, very sad face.
We live in a decent house in a nice neighborhood. Not a McMansion, nothing fancy, but a nice, decent house. We even have about 25% equity in it. So we're not in over our heads or upside down, thankfully, but we will be over our heads soon now that we just have my income to depend upon. The worst thing is the credit card debt. We just have two cards that we have anything on, but they're pretty significant balances. We've not used them for anything frivolous, only for absolute necessities, until this year. Our bank doesn't escrow for property taxes, so we had to pay this year's taxes with the credit card. EEEEEK. If I could pay off those two cards, we'd manage to get by on just my salary...I think. Maybe. :-)
Cars? Yes, we have two cars. They're both almost 9 years old...2002 models. Mine is a Subaru with 139,000 miles on it. I love, love, love my Subaru, and it's a good thing because at this rate, it's only middle aged!! My husband's Jeep fortunately has only abou 68,000 miles on it, so it's just a baby, relatively speaking.
So we're not living large, but rest assured, I'm extremely grateful for what we have and that we're not much worse off than we are, like so many others. And I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share our story with you. Thanks for reading!

First tip: Old Navy sale!!
I love me some Old Navy, even better, I love me some Old Navy sales! And right now, they're offering 30% off their new stuff. This morning, I ordered Mark, my son, a hoodie and a long-sleeved jersey-type shirt, and after the 30% off and the two $10 reward certificates I've been hoarding for months, I paid just about $8 for two brand, new shirts...that was basically paying for the shipping & tax and getting the shirts for free...Whoo hoo!!!
So, here we go
Hi, I'm Anne. Welcome to my world. I'm a midwestern mom who works full time in marketing. I'm married with an 11 year old son. My husband, after 32 years of steady, full-time employment was laid off two years ago, ugh. He's about to become a 99'er as they're calling people like him now. Those long-term unemployed who have or are about to exhaust their unemployment benefits. Not that he hasn't tried, at last count he'd applied for somewhere between 160 and 180 jobs, with only a handfull of interviews resulting.
So, we're about to be trying to get by on just my income until he can find something. But we're not whining, we're not complaining; and we're very aware that there are a whole lot of people much worse off than we are. That doesn't mean we're not struggling to keep our heads above water, we are. Keeping a sense of humor has become paramount in all this, because if I didn't, I'd be lost. I want to share our story of trying to make it in this economy, but I'll do it with humor and fun.
I've also learned a few things since living on a really strict budget (I now fancy myself a bit of a frugalista), and my intent is to share those things with you. I've learned from my frugal friends and sometimes from hilarious trial & error, and I'll share it all.
Last, but not least, I'm sure you've seen the donate button. A couple friends suggested I do that b/c you never know when JLo and her new $12million American Idol paycheck are going to stop by to read my blog and feel generous. No, really, they said I should do it because you just never know when someone might want to help out with five or ten dollars. I'm not used to that, but when it's possibly going to be a choice between food and heat in the near future, I guess I'm not above trying to open a new revenue stream. So no pressure, just come read my blog, share your "frugalista" tips and stories, and maybe we can get through this together! Thanks, talk to you soon!
